LA Sheriff Cycling

The LASD Cycling Team is back after a 13-year hiatus since the nationally renowned Chevrolet - LA Sheriff Cycling Team dissolved in 1996 after five years of competitive racing. Department members from competitive cyclists, triathletes, to weekend enthusiasts, met several times early this year with the common goal of reviving the cycling club. With the design and development of the new jersey, establishment of ride captains, and a rapidly growing list of interested riders, LASD Cycling has truly returned!

A large portion of the credit for the revival of the cycling club goes to Scott Menell, Reggie Gautt and Hirsh Yokoyama. They beautifully designed the new cycling jersey, using the theme of the Department flag and updating the old race team jersey. Scott arranged for the fabrication of the jerseys, which were purchased by the initial cycling club members. On June 11, 2009, members of the cycling team presented Sheriff Leroy Baca with a team jersey and advised him of the latest efforts of the club members. Without Scott's efforts in developing the new jersey, a revival of the cycling club would not have been possible.

Under the leadership of Sergeant Mike Austin of Men's Central Jail, the LASD Cycling Team assembled 43 talented riders from the Department family, both active and retired, and raised $23,175 to benefit the fight against Multiple Sclerosis. The MS 150 Bay to Bay Tour is a two-day 150 mile cycling event which takes a scenic coastal route from Irvine to San Diego, with an overnight stop in Carlsbad. Several department members have participated in past years as volunteer ride marshals, however, Mike was compelled to organize a sizable donation from a group of riders from the Department. He recruited riders, ordered jerseys, organized training rides, and raised donations.

Ride captains were established as a point of contact for information and organizing participation in cycling events and training rides. If you're interested in information about LASD Cycling, feel free to contact a ride captain in your area, or email
